Chalk pastel. 15" x 22.5". 2016.

This was my first drawing of the 2016 year and it took 29 hours to complete. Red-tailed hawks are the most common raptor in North America, with an expansive range from Southern Mexico to Northern Canada. These large hawks thrive in almost every environment, including cities. They are often seen along the highways sitting on fence posts, road signs, telephone poles, in trees, or soaring on the updrafts caused by the heat from the road. I will count them while driving from Waterloo to Toronto and will sometimes see as many as 20 or more along the 401. Although red-tailed hawks are so abundant, I love them because they are all so unique. Each bird has a very distinct feather pattern; some are very dark, some are light, some have a very red tail, while others have a light brown tail, some have a heavily spotted belly, while others are mostly white. Juvenile red-tailed hawks are completely brown with barring all over. Their abundance directly relates to their ability to adapt to new surroundings and being able to hunt for a wide variety of food such as mice, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, voles, and even carrion. Red-tailed hawks are one of my favourite birds, and although I see them almost every day, I never tire of catching a glimpse of one of these majestic raptors.
